Seattle is the most northerly city in the continental United States. It has been consistently among the five fastest growing cities in the U.S.  Much of this growth has been initiated by the establishment of The Boeing Company after World War II and the accompanying business expansion as a center for aircraft manufacturing. Then, beginning in the 1980’s, technology began to gain a foothold in Seattle, rapidly accelerating after Microsoft located its headquarters there followed by Amazon in 1994. Weyerhaeuser, the forestry products company with its research facilities and retailers Costco and Nordstrom are also headquartered in the Seattle area.

Seattle is a major gateway for trade with Asia as it is one of the largest ports in North America in terms of container volume. With its Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the origin point of many cruises, it is also a gateway for tourists who, among other attractions, can enjoy the world-renowned fish market and Seattle’s coffee culture – which is epitomized by Starbucks and Seattle’s Best Coffee.
