Los Angeles translates as “The Angels” from Spanish and, is often simply called L.A. It is the financial, commercial and cultural center of southern California.  With its estimated population of about 4 million it is the second-most populous city in the United States. It is the seat of Los Angeles county, the most populated county in the U.S.

Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood – the Hollywood sign is recognized around the world – a major entertainment industry. Television, motion pictures, video games, music recording and production are all prominent. Aside from its entertainment industry the economy centers around international trade, various aspects of technology, petroleum (oil was discovered here in the late 1800’s and I still being produced), aerospace, fashion and tourism. Other significant sectors include finance and financial services, transportation, law, healthcare and telecommunications. L.A. is the largest manufacturing center in the U.S.

There is an astounding assortment of languages being spoken in Los Angeles, with close to 100 languages being heard on the streets. It is estimated that the number of languages spoken increases to over 200 if the entire county is considered. Official publications and documents are published in between 7 and 10 languages.

Greater LA is home to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which together comprise the fifth-busiest port in the world and serve as a gateway to the Pacific rim. They are the busiest in the United States by container volume, with the major emphasis on imports and exports from China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand.
