Baltimore, one of the most popular cities in the country, is an historically important seaport. It is the home of Fort McHenry, the birthplace of the “The Star-Spangled Banner”. There are also attractions such as the Civil War era warship “The USS Constellation” and the National Aquarium. Baltimore, which is nicknamed Charm City, is the 29th most populous city with a population of about 621,000 and was established by the Constitution of Maryland. It is not part of any county and is thus the largest independent city in the United States. The metro Baltimore area has a population of about 2.8 million, which makes it the 21st largest metropolitan area in the US and is dubbed the “City of Neighborhoods”. More than 65,000 properties in Baltimore are listed on the National Register, more than any other inner city in the US. 

Baltimore is a major medical and biosciences center, noted for advanced medical treatment and research. Johns Hopkins Hospital, established in 1889, and Johns Hopkins University, established in 1876, have a world-renowned reputation in these specialties and are the city’s two top employers.

Almost a quarter of the jobs in the Baltimore region were in science, technology, engineering and math, including maintenance and repair, as of 2013, in part attributed to the city’s extensive undergraduate and graduate schools.

The center of international commerce for the region is the World Trade Centre Baltimore. It houses the Maryland Port Administration and U.S. headquarters for major shipping lines. Baltimore is ranked 9th for total dollar value of cargo and 13th for cargo tonnage for all U.S. ports. In 2014, total cargo moving through the port totaled 29.5 million tons, down from 30.3 million tons in 2013.
