Portland, Oregon is a major port at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. When founded in the early 1800’s it was named after Portland, Maine. The city experienced significant growth resulting from the industrial boom during the Second World War. Then in the 1960’s Portland began developing the liberal values and the accompanying counter culture for which it has become well known. It is known around the world for its land-use planning and its reputation as one of the world’s most environmentally conscious cities. It has a wide network of public transportation, including many bicycle paths and over 10,000 acres of public parks. Because of its ideal climate for growing roses, it is nicknamed the City of Roses.

Tourism is an important element of Portland’s economy with its parks, walking trails, the Oregon Zoo and the Portland Japanese Garden. From March to December the Portland Saturday Market operates, offering a large number of vendors selling handmade arts and crafts, fresh food and just the pleasant atmosphere of a market, which attracts many local residents and visiting tourists. Portland is also home to two professional sports teams.

Important to the economy are the two universities in Portland and multiple medical/health care facilities. Music, film production and the performing arts are prominent in Portland.
